Ice Test

With the 90 Meter Ice/Towing Tank, Oceanic has the ability to conduct tests in ice for a wide range of icebreaking ships and offshore structures. A typical ship model test program in one ice sheet would include: ice resistance (three speeds), propulsion tests (three speeds), turning circle experiments, and ridge ramming. Ice monitoring and control would include: ice thickness survey, flexural strength, compressive and shear strength, ice density and friction coefficient between the hull and the ice. For testing of offshore structures, a six-component global base dynamometer records loads on the structure. In addition to test programs, the Planar Motion Mechanism (PMM) can be installed to allow captive maneuvering experiments to be made. The PMM has 'plug-in' modules that allow testing of structures and moored buoys while the ice moves in a curvilinear path relative to the vessel simulating changes in ice drift direction.

To date, over 800 ice sheets have been grown in the ice tank and an extensive database of ship and offshore structures exists. Oceanic's expertise in ice technology is backed by experience in understanding the conditions of the North Atlantic. Background in assessing models for the severe conditions in the North Atlantic is one of the reasons designers and owners of marine systems choose Oceanic for performance evaluation services.

Examples of Projects:

  • FPSO in Extreme Conditions - Tests involving pack ice loading.
  • Ice Loading on a Ship-to-Ship Crude Oil Transfer System - An evaluation to investigate the following: the limiting ice environment that would result in tensile failure, or in excessive abrasion, of a floating oil transfer hose for a tandem mooring arrangement of FSO and shuttle tanker; and the loading on the FSO/shuttle mooring lines, on a Single Anchor Leg Mooring (SALM) hawser, and on the fenders for an alternate side-by-side mooring arrangement.
  • Type 1100 Icebreaker Conversion - A study to determine the suitability of the vessel for a dual science/icebreaking role. Tests involving flow visualization experiments in ice and initial blister drag experiments as part of the ice flow visualization experiments.
  • Performance Evaluation of Icebreaking Vessels - Tests involving maneuvering and propulsion in ice.
  • Full Scale Abrasion Tests on Tanker Offloading Hose - Sections of Tranfer Hose were dragged against ice sheets ranging from 150 - 270mm thick, to evaluate wear on the hose resulting from extended season shipping operation
